Mufulira Wanderers Football Club has announced the departure of club captain Owen Mwamba, bringing an end to a remarkable 15-year journey at Shinde Stadium.
A product of the Wanderers Academy, Mwamba joined the club as a young boy and rose through the ranks to become one of the most respected leaders in the club’s recent history. His departure marks the end of an era for the legendary Zambian club.
Throughout his time with Abena Milambo, Mwamba established himself as a symbol of commitment, discipline and loyalty. From academy graduate to first-team captain, he embodied the values of Mufulira Wanderers both on and off the pitch.
A Leader On and Off the Pitch
In his final season at the club, Mwamba helped Wanderers lift the IRH Challenge Cup and guided the team to the semifinals of the ABSA Cup.
Beyond his defensive duties, the captain also contributed an impressive 16 goals during his Wanderers career, often stepping up when the team needed him most.
His influence stretched beyond statistics, with his leadership in the dressing room and dedication to the badge earning admiration from teammates, coaches and supporters alike.
Emotional Farewell
Reflecting on his departure, Mwamba described Wanderers as home and thanked everyone who played a role in his journey.
“Wanderers is home. I came here as a boy from the academy and I’m leaving as a man who gave everything for this badge.”
“To the executive, technical bench, my teammates, and most importantly our passionate supporters — thank you for the memorable 15 years of love and belief.”
“Leaving Shinde is not easy, but I go with my head high, knowing I served this great club with all my heart. Once MAITE, always MAITE.”
Club Pays Tribute
Mufulira Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Evans Chiyanta paid tribute to the long-serving defender and acknowledged his immense contribution to the club.
“Owen is Wanderers through and through. Fifteen years of dedication, leadership and sacrifice cannot be measured in stats alone.”
“He is a true son of Mufulira. On behalf of the entire Wanderers family, we thank Owen for his service and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
Chiyanta also assured the defender that the doors of Shinde Stadium would always remain open to him.
Conclusion
Few players get the opportunity to spend their entire careers serving one club, and even fewer leave behind a legacy as significant as Owen Mwamba’s.
After 15 years of unwavering commitment, leadership and service, the Wanderers captain departs as one of the club’s modern-day icons. While his journey at Shinde has come to an end, his place in the hearts of the Maite faithful is guaranteed forever.
