Former Chipolopolo defender Francis Kasonde has taken a significant step in his coaching career after being appointed as the Under-18 coach for English side St. Austell Football Club, a team based in South Western England that plays in the Western League Premier Division—the ninth tier of English football.
The 37-year-old, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career with clubs like ZESCO United, Power Dynamos, and Al-Suwaiq SC in Oman, has expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to player development in the United Kingdom.
Kasonde Begins New Chapter Abroad
Kasonde confirmed his appointment in an interview, stating that the role represents a new challenge and a critical learning phase in his post-playing career:
“I’m really happy about my appointment as a coach for the reserve St. Austell football team,” said Kasonde.
“I’m excited to be given this opportunity to learn and grow my career. Learning is a lifelong process, and this new challenge will develop my skills, allow me to work with talented players, and contribute to the team’s success.”
The appointment is not only a personal milestone for Kasonde but also a proud moment for Zambian football, as another former international breaks into the European coaching ecosystem.

Overcoming Licensing Hurdles
Despite holding a CAF B Licence, Kasonde revealed that transitioning into the European coaching framework came with its fair share of obstacles. UEFA’s regulations no longer allow direct conversions of foreign qualifications, requiring coaches to start afresh in most cases.
“It wasn’t easy at all. UEFA now requires you to sit for the exams and go through the entire licensing process instead of simply converting previous qualifications. So I had to go through all the steps and prove myself,” he said.
Kasonde has since obtained his UEFA C Licence and is currently enrolled in the UEFA A Licence program, which positions him among a rare breed of African coaches pursuing top-tier European coaching credentials.
Aiming Higher with St. Austell FC
The ex-defender, who featured in several Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns and helped Zambia win the 2012 AFCON title, is optimistic about the learning opportunities that lie ahead. He also paid tribute to the St. Austell FC management for entrusting him with the role.
“Many thanks to St. Austell management for giving me this opportunity,” said Kasonde. “I am also looking forward to learning from the senior coaching staff and contributing positively to the development of the younger players.”
St. Austell’s U18 team forms part of the club’s reserve and developmental structure, providing a platform for nurturing young local talent in Cornwall and surrounding regions.
From Chipolopolo Legend to Coach
Kasonde’s appointment is part of a growing trend of former Zambian internationals transitioning into coaching roles both at home and abroad. His journey underscores the importance of education, adaptability, and perseverance in remaining relevant in the football world.
With eyes now firmly set on completing his UEFA A Licence, Kasonde’s long-term goal is clear: to eventually manage at a senior professional level—whether in Europe or back on the African continent.
Conclusion
Francis Kasonde’s journey from the heart of Zambia’s defense to the touchlines of English football is a testament to his passion, resilience, and commitment to growth. As he takes charge of St. Austell FC’s U18 side, he not only flies the Zambian flag high but also paves the way for others to follow in his footsteps.
