ZESCO United End Red Arrows’ 16-Match Unbeaten Run in MTN Super League
ZESCO United produced one of their most convincing performances of the season to bring Red Arrows’ remarkable 16-match unbeaten run to an end, securing a 3–1 victory at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in a rescheduled MTN Super League Week 5 encounter. The result not only reshaped the title race at the top but also gave Zega Mambo a much-needed lift as they continue to fight their way up the table.
The Airmen arrived in Ndola full of confidence after months without defeat, but ZESCO United showed intent, composure, and ruthlessness, especially in the second half. The win marked a significant psychological boost for Zega Mambo, while also tightening the gap at the summit of the league standings.
Elsewhere on the same day, Kabwe Warriors and Power Dynamos played out a competitive 1–1 draw, a result that had implications at both ends of the top half of the table as the MTN Super League continued to deliver drama in its rescheduled fixtures.
ZESCO United 3–1 Red Arrows
Red Arrows struck first in a tightly contested opening half when Joseph Phiri broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, giving the league leaders a slender advantage heading into the break. At that point, the Airmen looked on course to extend their unbeaten run, having controlled large spells and defended with discipline.
However, ZESCO United returned from halftime with renewed urgency. Just five minutes into the second half, Amine Hiver restored parity with a well-taken finish that shifted momentum firmly in the hosts’ favour. The equaliser energised Zega Mambo and exposed a rare vulnerability in the Red Arrows backline.
Seven minutes later, former Nkana and Power Dynamos striker Alex “Bazo” Ng’onga completed the turnaround, punishing defensive hesitation to put ZESCO United ahead. As Red Arrows pushed forward in search of an equaliser, spaces opened up, and Abraham Siankombo capitalised in the 86th minute to seal a famous 3–1 victory.
Despite the defeat, Red Arrows remain top of the MTN Super League standings with 31 points. Power Dynamos’ earlier result, however, reduced the Airmen’s cushion at the summit. For ZESCO United, the victory lifts them to 12th place on 14 points, a crucial step away from the relegation zone and a confidence boost ahead of their remaining fixtures.
Power Dynamos 1–1 Kabwe Warriors
At Arthur Davies Stadium, Power Dynamos were forced to settle for a share of the spoils after Kabwe Warriors showed resilience to secure a 1–1 draw. The home side dominated possession early on but struggled to convert their territorial advantage into clear-cut chances.
The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Samuel Bamidele calmly converted from the penalty spot, sending the home fans into celebration and briefly putting Power Dynamos on course for maximum points. The goal reflected sustained pressure and patience from the defending champions.
Kabwe Warriors, however, responded positively. Francis Banda emerged as the hero, finding the equaliser in the 73rd minute to silence the home crowd and rescue a valuable away point. The draw sees Power Dynamos move to 27 points, cutting Red Arrows’ lead at the top to four points. Kabwe Warriors climb to fifth place on the table, leapfrogging FC MUZA and strengthening their position in the top half.
Impact on the League Standings
Saturday’s rescheduled fixtures had a notable impact across the MTN Super League table. Red Arrows remain leaders with 31 points but now feel increased pressure from Power Dynamos, who continue to close the gap in the title race.
ZESCO United’s victory moves them up to 12th place with 14 points, offering breathing space and renewed belief as they aim to climb further away from danger. Kabwe Warriors’ draw keeps them firmly in fifth place, maintaining their push among the league’s stronger performers this season.
Conclusion
The MTN Super League once again delivered high-stakes drama as ZESCO United brought Red Arrows’ long unbeaten run to an end, shaking up the title race in the process. While the Airmen remain top, the margin for error has narrowed significantly, and momentum is beginning to shift. With Power Dynamos closing in and teams like ZESCO United and Kabwe Warriors gaining confidence, the battle for league supremacy is far from settled.
