The Future of Nkoloma Stadium: A Call for Modernization
As football continues to grow in Zambia, the state of sports infrastructure remains a pressing concern. One such facility is Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka, which has struggled to meet the standards required to host international competitions, particularly under the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Recently, Red Arrows Football Club was forced to relocate its CAF Champions League preliminary round fixtures from their home ground at Nkoloma to Levy Mwanawasa Stadium due to Nkoloma’s inability to meet required standards.
This situation has sparked a broader conversation about the pressing need for upgrades at Nkoloma Stadium. Key areas such as the VIP section, floodlights, and overall security are in dire need of improvement. With the rainy season approaching, the stadium’s open wing originally meant to provide shelter for fans is not adequately equipped to handle inclement weather, leaving fans vulnerable and decreasing the stadium’s appeal.
The Financial Potential of Stadium Upgrades
While upgrading a stadium may appear costly at first, the long-term financial benefits could significantly outweigh the initial investment. Many neighboring countries, including Zimbabwe, have benefited from stadium improvements. In fact, Zimbabwe hired Zambia’s Hero Stadium for a continental assignment, showcasing the potential income from leasing modern facilities.
Red Arrows, for example, had to shoulder substantial costs for moving their CAF matches to Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, including expenses for logistics, lodging, and the hire of the stadium itself. Now imagine if Nkoloma Stadium had been upgraded to meet CAF standards. Not only would the costs of relocation have been avoided, but additional revenue could have been generated from gate takings, stadium rentals, and other event-related profits.
Football is a business, and treating it as such could have a transformative impact on Zambia’s sports economy. Nkoloma Stadium has the potential to become a profitable venue, not only for local matches but also for regional and continental tournaments.
Learning from Other African Nations
Countries such as Tanzania and South Africa have proactively upgraded their stadiums to attract larger football events, both domestic and international. A modern stadium with the right facilities creates an inviting ambiance for players and fans alike. It can even open up the possibility of hosting midweek games, which would allow working fans to enjoy the atmosphere in the evenings in a well-maintained and comfortable setting.
Zambia has the potential to follow in the footsteps of these nations. If we invest in our infrastructure now, it could pay off by putting Lusaka and other cities on the map as key football hubs in Southern Africa. Floodlights, comfortable seating areas, and enhanced security features are just the beginning. Upgrading facilities like the VIP section and adding more shelter could position Nkoloma Stadium as a key venue for prestigious CAF matches and other international events.
A Vision for the Future
As passionate Zambian football enthusiasts, many of us dream of attending midweek matches after work, surrounded by the sounds of Zambian Bostele songs in a stadium equipped with proper floodlights, adequate seating, and robust security. The modernization of Nkoloma Stadium would not only improve the football experience but could also contribute significantly to Lusaka’s standing as a key sports destination.
Zambia’s football infrastructure has vast potential, and the time to act is now. Upgrading our stadiums could lead to a brighter, more profitable future for Zambian football. If we don’t seize this opportunity, the chance to develop may slip away and with it, potential revenue and prestige. Football is not just a sport; it’s an industry, and investing in it today will pay dividends for generations to come.
