The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has officially announced the end of its partnership with Betway Zambia, marking the conclusion of a two-year sponsorship that began in 2023. The collaboration had been instrumental in driving football development through investments in coaching, club infrastructure, and fan engagement across the country.
End of an Era for ZPL and Betway
In a statement issued by ZPL Head of Communications, Christina Zulu, the league confirmed that Betway’s decision to withdraw was primarily due to the heavy financial impact of the newly introduced government excise duty on all betting companies. The additional tax burden has made it difficult for betting firms to sustain high-level sports sponsorships, leading Betway to scale back its investments in local football.
During the partnership, Betway significantly contributed to several developmental programmes within the ZPL, including coaching clinics, grassroots initiatives, and enhanced fan engagement activities. The partnership was widely regarded as a catalyst in professionalising the ZPL brand and promoting corporate involvement in Zambian football.
ZPL’s Commitment to the Future
Despite the setback, the ZPL has reaffirmed its commitment to securing new sponsorships and strategic partnerships that will ensure the continued growth of domestic football. The league remains optimistic that other corporate entities will come on board to support Zambia’s top-tier football system.
“The Zambian Premier League acknowledges Betway’s contribution and professionalism throughout the partnership and remains committed to securing new strategic partners to sustain the continued development of Zambian football,” read part of the official statement.
The ZPL has also hinted at ongoing discussions with potential sponsors, aiming to replace the gap left by Betway and maintain the league’s financial stability and operational standards.
Conclusion
While the end of the Betway partnership marks a challenging period for the Zambian Premier League, it also presents an opportunity for fresh collaborations and innovative sponsorship models. The ZPL’s proactive approach to finding new partners underscores its long-term vision of building a strong, financially sustainable, and globally competitive football league.
