Drama at ZESCO United: Fans Protest Despite Apology
ZESCO United’s season has taken an early dramatic twist after the club fielded 20 ineligible players, a blunder that forced management to issue a public apology to both fans and sponsors. Despite the apology and a 3-0 victory in Week 2, the damage appears far from repaired supporters have taken to protests, demanding sweeping changes at the club.
Fans Say “No” to Tenant Chilumba
One of the loudest demands centers on Head Coach Tenant Chilumba. Even though his team bounced back with a comfortable win, many fans insist he is not the right man for the job. For them, his position remains untenable after the embarrassing administrative scandal cost ZESCO three points and three goals against Konkola Blades.
The Ponga Liwewe-Led Executive Under Fire
The protests have also turned attention to the club’s leadership. The Ponga Liwewe-led executive, along with the entire secretariat, is facing pressure from fans who accuse them of mismanagement. Among the grievances:
No new kit for the season despite sponsorship money allegedly available.
Players still wearing old jerseys featuring a front sponsor whose company has since changed its name.
A string of questionable events in recent years that have eroded trust.
The Janza & Liwewe Era Raising More Questions
The return of former technical figure Honour Janza alongside CEO Ponga Liwewe was expected to steady the ship, but fans believe it has only sparked more internal friction. If these disputes persist, ZESCO United risk falling behind both domestically and on the continental stage.
Who Is Behind the Protests?
The big question remains are these protests a genuine reflection of frustrated loyal fans, or could they be politically charged, with certain figures eyeing top positions at the club? Either way, the discontent is real, and it’s spilling into the public eye.
What Next for ZESCO?
On the pitch, recruitment looks promising, but boardroom chaos threatens to overshadow progress. Unless management resolves these issues swiftly, the negative energy could derail ZESCO United’s ambitions in both the Zambia Super League and CAF competitions.
For now, the fans have spoken and the ball is firmly in management’s court.
