Copper Queens Ready to Shine at WAFCON – Nora Häuptle

Zambia Women’s National Team head coach Nora Häuptle has expressed strong confidence in the Copper Queens’ readiness to compete at the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to be hosted in Morocco. With preparations intensifying, the Swiss tactician believes her squad is mentally, physically, and tactically positioned to make a strong impact on the continental stage.

The Copper Queens are aiming high at the tournament, with qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and a top four finish firmly in sight.

Focus on Fitness, Defence, and Tactical Growth

Häuptle revealed that her current priorities revolve around improving fitness levels, tightening the team’s defensive structure, and increasing tactical flexibility. Despite Zambia’s impressive attacking output, defensive consistency remains a key area of improvement.

“We scored an average of two goals per game last year but conceded 1.7. That is something we must reduce,” Häuptle explained. “We have outlined four preparation steps, and we are currently in step one, which is a local camp where we are monitoring 38 players.”

The coach also confirmed that nine players are actively playing abroad, while Ochumba Lubanji and Fridah Mukoma are currently sidelined through injury.

Young Talent in the Spotlight

The squad includes seven players from the Under-20 setup, and Häuptle has been particularly impressed with their energy and quality. She has not ruled out handing opportunities to some of the youngsters at senior level.

“We have young, energetic players from the Under-20 squad that we are assessing, and I would love to see some of them make the final cut,” she said.

The integration of youth is part of a broader long-term vision to build depth and sustainability within the Copper Queens setup.

Tough Group, Bold Ambitions

Zambia have been drawn in Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria, Malawi, and Egypt—arguably one of the most competitive groups at the tournament. However, Häuptle remains optimistic and fearless.

“I adore this group. It is the toughest group, but it will lift us,” she stated.

Her ambition for the tournament is clear: a top-four finish and eventual World Cup qualification.

Eyes on the Ultimate Goal

Beyond short-term success, Häuptle has set her sights on something even greater—turning Zambia into continental champions.

“We want to win this trophy one day. We have a mission to turn the Copper Queens into Gold,” she declared.

The team is expected to play several friendly matches, including one against a highly ranked opponent, as part of final preparations before travelling to Morocco.

Conclusion

With a clear plan, youthful energy, and bold ambition, the Copper Queens head into WAFCON determined to compete with Africa’s best. Under Nora Häuptle’s guidance, Zambia are not only aiming to impress but to establish themselves as genuine contenders on the continental stage.
