The 2024/2025 MTN Super League season concluded in breathtaking fashion, with heartbreak and survival playing out simultaneously across Zambia. The final day was a whirlwind of emotions, particularly for Atletico Lusaka and Zanaco FC, whose destinies hung in the balance until the last whistle. Despite a spirited performance, Atletico Lusaka were relegated following a 3-2 loss to Zesco United, while Zanaco survived by the slimmest of margins—goal difference.

Early Promise Fades for Atletico Lusaka
Atletico Lusaka entered the decisive match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium needing a win to stay afloat. The “Bad Boys” started perfectly, taking the lead just two minutes in. However, Alex Ng’onga quickly responded with a stunning bicycle kick to level for Zesco United in the 11th minute.
Julius Kumwenda restored Atletico’s lead before halftime, briefly lifting them out of the relegation zone. With Zanaco trailing to Red Arrows and Atletico ahead, it looked like Zanaco were heading for the drop.
Zanaco’s Relegation Fears Turn to Relief
The Airmen increased Zanaco’s misery early in the second half when Angel Lubamba scored to make it 1-0 for Red Arrows. Despite a Ng’onga penalty equalizer in the 73rd minute, Zanaco were still set to be relegated based on the Atletico scoreline.
But then came the moment that changed everything—George Ngoma fired in Zesco’s third goal in the 80th minute, turning the match on its head. Atletico were now trailing 3-2 and headed back to National Division One. Despite Zanaco’s 1-0 loss, their superior goal difference saved them in the most dramatic fashion.
Final-Day Scores and Relegation Picture
Elsewhere across the country, results sealed the fate of other teams:
Green Eagles 1-0 FC MUZA
Nkana 2-0 Kabwe Warriors (Goals: Charles Zulu, Idris Mbombo)
Forest Rangers 3-1 Indeni (both already relegated)
Lumwana Radiants 2-0 Nkwazi
NAPSA Stars 0-0 Mutondo Stars
Nchanga Rangers 1-1 Power Dynamos
Green Buffaloes 2-1 Mighty Mufulira Wanderers (Goals: Chilimba Moonga, Bornwell Mwape)
Relegated Teams Confirmed
The 2024/25 MTN Super League ends with four clubs relegated to the National Division One League:
Forest Rangers
Indeni
Atletico Lusaka
Nkwazi FC
While Atletico Lusaka’s fall may feel harsh after a strong showing, especially on the final day, it highlights the ruthless nature of the league where every goal counts. Zanaco FC, once giants of Zambian football, now escape relegation by the finest of margins and will need to regroup heading into next season.
