
MTN Super League side Mufulira Wanderers have confirmed that defender Bwembya Kakungu has been sentenced to six months in prison following his conviction for assault.
The club announced the development in a statement issued on Friday, acknowledging the court’s ruling and outlining its position on the matter.
Club Respects Court’s Decision
In its statement, Mufulira Wanderers said it had taken note of Kakungu’s conviction and subsequent prison sentence.
“Mufulira Wanderers Football Club has taken note of the conviction and subsequent six-month prison sentence handed down to our player, Bwembya Kakungu, for assault.”
The nine-time Zambian champions stressed that violence has no place within the club or society.
“The Club respects the decision of the Court and wishes to state that violence and assault have no place in Mufulira Wanderers Football Club, football or society.”
Internal Review Underway
The club reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, respect and responsible conduct, both on and off the pitch.
Wanderers also confirmed that the matter is being reviewed in line with the club’s internal policies, Kakungu’s contractual obligations and the applicable football regulations.
“We uphold the values of discipline, respect and responsible conduct, both on and off the field. The Club is reviewing the matter in accordance with its internal policies, the player’s contractual obligations and applicable football regulations.”
The club added that any further decision regarding Kakungu’s future would be communicated through the appropriate channels.
