Kennedy Musonda Targets MTN Super League Title with ZESCO United

Chipolopolo striker Kennedy Musonda is targeting MTN Super League success with ZESCO United after returning to Zambia following a spell abroad.

The 31-year-old forward left Power Dynamos in 2023 for Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga) after an impressive campaign in which he scored 11 goals in 17 matches. He later moved to Israeli side Hapoel Ramat Gan Givatayim before joining Hapoel Nof HaGalil on a free transfer.

Musonda attracted interest from several MTN Super League clubs earlier this month, with former club Power Dynamos initially considered favourites to sign him. However, ZESCO United ultimately won the race for his signature.

Speaking to Daily Zed, Musonda said returning to Zambia feels natural given the amount of his career he has spent in the country.

“Zambia is home. I think I’ve played most of my career here. So there is nothing new, but excited to see what the season brings and what the Zambian League has to offer, and I’m also excited to join Zesco United,” he said.

The striker has set ambitious targets with his new club, with ZESCO United aiming to reclaim the MTN Super League title and return to continental football.

“So I think we want to get Zesco back to where it belongs, and I think that is what we’re looking forward to.”

Musonda believes winning the league must be the club’s primary objective, while securing a top-two finish and qualification for continental competition would also represent progress.

“The main objective, first of all, the club comes first, is to win the league. Nothing less than that. Then second target is at least to come out second and play some, the Confederation, but it’s to go back to playing African football.”

The Zambia international also has personal ambitions, targeting the MTN Super League Golden Boot after returning to domestic football.

“Personally, of course, my job is to score goals, and the highest target as a striker is to be the top scorer. So I will do everything in my power, and of course, it’s not just me. I need my teammates.”

Musonda’s return gives ZESCO United an experienced attacking option as the Ndola giants look to build a squad capable of challenging for domestic honours and securing a return to African club competition.
