ZPL Warns Against Hooliganism

Lusaka, Zambia

The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has issued a strong warning against the increasing incidents of hooliganism and unsportsmanlike behavior during league matches. This comes in response to recent disturbances during several games, including missile-throwing at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium during the Week 15 Kitwe Derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana FC. Similar misconduct was observed during Week 17 matches at Railway Stadium in Kabwe between Kabwe Warriors and Nkana, as well as the Atletico Lusaka versus ZESCO United clash at Nkoloma Stadium. These incidents endangered lives, disrupted matches, and tarnished the image of Zambian football.

ZPL Chairman Kephas Katongo expressed deep concern over the trend and vowed to take decisive action to maintain the integrity of the league.
“The alarming rise in such behavior is unacceptable and must be curbed immediately. We would like to issue a strong warning to fans, coaches, players, and referees regarding hooliganism and unsportsmanship. With our league followed across the continent and beyond, we must protect the image of Zambian football. Every football fan understands that the game has three possible results, and all must be accepted in the spirit of sportsmanship,” Katongo said.

Katongo called on security personnel at stadia to enforce law and order more effectively, emphasizing that some actions by fans amount to criminal acts and must be treated as such. He reminded stakeholders that the sale of beer in bottles is prohibited in stadia, citing it as a significant safety risk.

Referees were also cautioned to ensure fair officiating, with Katongo warning that any referee found guilty of poor performance would face strict penalties.
“ZPL will not hesitate to ban individuals, including referees, whose actions disrupt the game. With modern technologies available to capture events during matches, accountability will be enforced,” he added.

The Zambian Premier League reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe, professional, and enjoyable environment for all stakeholders. The league aims to uphold the integrity and reputation of Zambian football and ensure that matches are conducted in a manner that reflects the values of the sport.
