Fashion Sakala Hints at Retirement Plans After FIFA 2034 Announcement
Zambian striker Fashion Sakala has sparked speculation regarding his football career plans after making subtle remarks in a video congratulating Saudi Arabia for being awarded the hosting rights of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. While his message was primarily celebratory, Sakala’s choice of words hinted at a possible early retirement, leaving his fans both surprised and curious about his future.
The video, shared by his Saudi Arabian club, highlighted Sakala’s enthusiasm for the country’s major achievement in securing the World Cup hosting rights. However, it was his reflective tone and comments that caught followers off guard. While congratulating the Kingdom, Sakala stated sentiments that led some to believe he may not aim to extend his playing career for many years, though no official statement has been made about a retirement timeline.
Sakala, who has been a key figure for both his club and the Zambian national team, continues to deliver stellar performances in the Saudi Pro League. Known for his energy, flair, and goal-scoring ability, his early retirement would undoubtedly be a significant loss for Zambian football. The speculation has raised debates on social media, with fans encouraging Sakala to reconsider, while others believe the comment may have been taken out of context.
The forward remains focused on his current responsibilities, and for now, Zambians will continue to rally behind him as he represents the country on an international stage. Whether Sakala’s remarks reflect genuine plans or were made in jest remains to be seen, but the video has added intrigue to the striker’s future.
“It will be too early to retire” – Fans
In 2034, Sakala will be 37 years old and some of his fans feel he would be too young to retire from football.
James Selemba, a Facebook user, said, “You are still young to retire at that age.”
“Why do our African footballers retire so early? When did we start watching people like CR7, Messi, Ronaldinho & many others?? Are the years of retiring in football different here in Africa?” another Facebook user Kessy Bj Daniels also wondered.
Sakala, who has been ostracized from the national team after falling out with coach Avram Grant, whom he accuses of coercing players to sign with his agent, Nir Karin, joined Saudi Arabian club Al Fayha in August 2023 from Scottish powerhouse Rangers.
He joined Ibrox from KV Oostende in the summer of 2021. During his two-year stay in Scotland, Sakala scored 24 goals and assisted 15 times in 91 games, winning the Scottish Cup. He also competed in a major European final, the 2022 UEFA Europa Final versus Frankfurt.
Since his move to Saudi Arabia, Sakala has been in top form, scoring 26 goals and 11 assists in 54 games across all competitions under a year to become Al Fayha’s all-time scorer.
