The ABSA Cup 2025: Teams Begin to Take Shape
The ABSA Cup 2025 is shaping up to be a thrilling competition, with teams from the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) and ZPL National League already securing their spots. With the introduction of the expanded format, this year’s tournament promises to be even more competitive and inclusive, featuring 21 teams in total.
Zambian Premier League Qualifiers
The top seven teams from the ZPL Premier League have officially booked their places in the ABSA Cup:
ZESCO United
Kabwe Warriors
Nkana
Power Dynamos
Red Arrows
Green Eagles
Green Buffaloes
These sides will bring a wealth of experience and firepower to the competition, setting the stage for electrifying matchups.
ZPL National League Qualifiers
After Week 17, the top four teams in the ZPL National League standings have also earned their ABSA Cup berths:
Konkola Blades
Kansanshi Dynamos
Prison Leopards
Mpulungu Harbour
These teams have battled hard throughout the season and now have the chance to compete against Zambia’s top-tier clubs.
Heartbreak for Nkwazi
Nkwazi FC suffered a devastating blow in their final push for ABSA Cup qualification. Despite needing just one point from their Week 17 fixture, a late goal by William Kamwanga for Lumwana Radiants sealed their fate. Both teams finished on equal points, but Lumwana edged Nkwazi out on goal difference, denying the High Flying Nkwazi an ABSA Cup slot in heartbreaking fashion.
Provincial Representation
With the expanded format, 10 provincial teams will join the fray, bringing the total number of participants to 21. This inclusion underscores the tournament’s commitment to showcasing football talent from across the country, promoting competition, and encouraging grassroots development.
The ABSA Cup 2025 promises to deliver memorable moments as Zambia’s finest clubs and emerging provincial teams clash for glory. Fans can expect thrilling football, dramatic finishes, and a showcase of the country’s growing talent.
Stay tuned for updates as the full lineup of 21 teams is finalized, and the fixtures are announced.
