Zambia U17 Shine in World Cup Debut with 3–1 Comeback Win Over Indonesia

By Bola Yapa Zed | 5th November 2025

The Zambia Under-17 Men’s National Team began their 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup campaign in style, coming from behind to secure a 3–1 victory over hosts Indonesia in Group H at the Lusail Academy Stadium in Qatar. The result marks a memorable start for Dennis Makinka’s young charges, who displayed maturity, resilience, and attacking flair in their World Cup debut.

Zambia started the match brightly, and they thought they had taken an early lead when Mapalo Simute found the net within the first minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Indonesia capitalized on that reprieve, opening the scoring through Zahaby Gholy in the 12th minute, sending the home crowd into celebration.

However, the Junior Chipolopolo responded brilliantly. Their attacking intent was rewarded when Forest Rangers winger Kelvin Chipelu provided a precise low cross for Atlético Lusaka forward Abel Salim Nyirongo, who calmly slotted home the equalizer in the 35th minute. Just two minutes later, Nyirongo struck again, curling a sensational 25-yard effort beyond the Indonesian goalkeeper to complete the turnaround and give Zambia a 2–1 lead.

Zambia continued to press forward with confidence, and their dominance paid off before halftime. Lukonde Mwale, the Spain-based midfielder, extended the lead to 3–1 in the 42nd minute after another brilliant assist from the lively Chipelu. The Junior Chipolopolo entered the break in control, leaving Indonesia struggling to cope with their quick transitions and pressing.

In the second half, Makinka’s side focused on game management, maintaining their shape and composure. James Sibeeene marshaled the defense with authority, ensuring Indonesia found no way back into the contest. Despite the hosts’ late push, Zambia’s backline remained disciplined to see out the victory.

With this impressive win, Zambia top Group H alongside tournament favorites Brazil, who thrashed Honduras 7–0 in the other group match. The Junior Chipolopolo now shift their attention to Friday’s encounter against Honduras, where a victory would guarantee them a spot in the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Coach Dennis Makinka praised his players for their determination and execution of the game plan. “We showed character and composure after going behind. The boys followed instructions and played with confidence. We’ll keep improving as the tournament progresses,” Makinka said after the match.
