Zambia Advances to Final Round of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers
The Zambia U-17 Women’s National Team has secured a spot in the final round of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, despite a narrow 1-0 defeat to Uganda in the second leg of their third-round matchup. The Copper Princesses progressed with a 2-1 aggregate score, following their 2-0 home victory last Sunday at the National Heroes Stadium.
Match Recap:
Uganda 1-0 Zambia (Aggregate: 2-1)
- Venue: St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, Uganda
- Date: Friday
The Copper Princesses held a strong defensive line despite Uganda’s relentless pressure from the start. The Teen Cranes’ intent to overturn the aggregate deficit was clear, winning an early corner and applying consistent pressure. However, Zambia’s defense remained resilient, and the first half ended in a goalless stalemate.
In the second half, Zambia’s coach Carol Kanyemba made strategic changes, introducing Mercy Chipasula and Taonga Mubanga to bolster the midfield. However, Uganda’s persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Sylvia Kabene scored the only goal of the match, narrowing Zambia’s aggregate lead to 2-1.

Despite Uganda’s continued efforts and pressing attacks, Zambia’s tactical changes, including the introduction of Harriet Matipa in the dying minutes, helped the team withstand the pressure. The Copper Princesses managed to hold on, and with the match ending 1-0 in favor of Uganda, Zambia’s aggregate lead was enough to see them through to the final round.
Key Highlights:
- First Leg Victory: Zambia’s 2-0 win at home, with goals from Ruth Mukoma and Namute Chileshe, provided a crucial cushion.
- Defensive Resilience: The Copper Princesses showcased a solid defensive performance under pressure in the second leg.
- Tactical Adjustments: Coach Carol Kanyemba’s substitutions played a key role in maintaining the team’s aggregate lead.
Next Challenge:
Zambia will face either Morocco or Algeria in the final round of qualifiers. Morocco holds a significant advantage after a 4-0 first-leg win against Algeria. The winner of this tie will meet Zambia, with the victor securing a spot at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
Road to the World Cup:
- FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: October 16, 2024 – November 3, 2024
- Host: Dominican Republic
- African Qualification Spots: 3
The Copper Princesses are now just one step away from achieving their World Cup dream, aiming to join the elite ranks of youth football on the global stage.
