“We’ll Pay Him Off Ourselves”: Zambian Fans Demand Avram Grant’s Exit

“We’ll Pay Him Off Ourselves”_ Zambian Fans Demand Avram Grant’s Exit

Chipolopolo Soccer Fans Association Chairman, Yotham Mwanza, has openly called for Avram Grant to step down as head coach of the Zambia National Team, stating that the Israeli tactician has failed to meet expectations since taking charge.

Speaking in strong terms, Mwanza said Zambian fans have lost confidence in Grant’s leadership following a string of poor results in major competitions, including the recently concluded 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where Zambia finished outside contention.

“Coach Grant’s performance has been below par. If FAZ is afraid to terminate his contract due to financial implications, we are ready as Zambians to contribute K10 each to pay him off,” Mwanza declared.

He added that a local technical bench could deliver better results, citing past national team success under homegrown coaches.

Concerns Over Government Funding Suspension

Reacting to government’s decision to suspend funding to FAZ over poor national team results, Mwanza cautioned that the move while understandable could cripple the entire football system, not just the senior team.

He warned that women’s football, youth academies, and grassroots development could suffer unintended consequences.

“Yes, the senior team has struggled, but cutting funding will affect the entire football pyramid. Dialogue is needed — not emotional decisions,” Mwanza added.

Despite his frustrations with Grant, Mwanza believes constructive engagement between FAZ, government, and fans could restore stability and chart a new path forward for Zambian football.
