2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning defender Hichani ‘HH’ Himoonde has called on the Chipolopolo to sustain their momentum from the recent victory over Tanzania as they prepare for a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Niger on Sunday, 12 October 2025, at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Enock Phiri of the Bola Yapa Zed Crew, Himoonde stressed that winning at home has now become a national obligation rather than a luxury.
“This game against Niger is very crucial because we haven’t won in front of our home fans in a long time,” said Himoonde. “It’s an opportunity to remind everyone of the strength of Zambian football and build confidence heading into the AFCON.”
Momentum Must Be Sustained
Zambia heads into this fixture on the back of a 1-0 away win over Tanzania, sealed by Fashion Sakala after a clever assist from Lubambo Musonda. The win brought relief after a challenging period for the national team and reignited fan optimism.
But Himoonde believes consistency must now be the next step.
“I liked what I saw in Tanzania,” he said. “The team showed good coordination, especially in keeping the ball and pressing high. Now the challenge is to maintain and improve on that performance.”
He stressed that big teams are not defined by one good match — but by sustained excellence.
“The right mindset and focus will be important if we are to finish well. This is not the time to relax.”
Home Support Will Be the Difference
Himoonde also issued a passionate plea to Zambian supporters to fill Levy Mwanawasa Stadium and create a hostile atmosphere for the visiting Niger side.
“The morale in the team is high, and I urge fans to go in high spirits and cheer the boys,” he added. “The players need that energy from the stands to push for victory.”
Beyond Three Points — A Statement of Intent
With the 2025 AFCON approaching, Himoonde believes that this match is more than just a qualifier — it is a statement of intent.
“This match is not just about points—it’s about building belief,” he concluded. “We have the talent, and with unity and focus, Zambia can rise again.”
