Sabobo’s Last-Gasp Penalty Seals Zambia Victory Over Tanzania

Zambia U20 national team secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday night in a CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations Group A match in Ismailia, courtesy of a last-minute penalty by Joseph Sabobo Banda.

The result significantly boosts Zambia’s chances of reaching the quarterfinals, putting them in third place with 5 points, just behind Sierra Leone (7 pts) and South Africa (6 pts) heading into the final group games.

VAR Drama and Ice-Cold Finish from Sabobo

The match seemed destined to end goalless after 90 minutes of deadlock, but the turning point came deep into stoppage time when VAR intervened. Zambian midfielder Emmanuel Mutale was brought down in the box by Ismail Ally, and after a review, a penalty was awarded in the 94th minute.

Sabobo Banda, calm under pressure, dispatched the spot kick into the bottom left corner to seal a crucial three points for the Young Chipolopolo.

Zambia’s Route to the Quarterfinals

Zambia’s path is now straightforward—beat South Africa, and depending on other results, they could finish top. Even a draw could see them through depending on goal difference or head-to-head results.

Meanwhile, Egypt and Tanzania will face off in a must-win game for the hosts, who sit fourth with 4 points.

Mulwanda’s Men Growing in Confidence

Coach Boyd Mulwanda praised his players for their resilience, particularly their ability to stay focused under pressure. After drawing against Sierra Leone and Egypt, this win reignites belief that the Young Chipolopolo can go far in the tournament.

Sabobo’s leadership and composure continue to be a driving force for Zambia, and with the South Africa clash looming, the momentum could not have shifted at a better time.
