Kabwa, Zambia – Newly promoted Mines United FC are finding life in the MTN Super League much tougher than expected. After four matches, the ambitious side has collected just one point, leaving them in the relegation zone and raising a burning question: Will Mines United survive their debut season in the top flight?
A Rough Start to Life in the Super League
Mines United opened their campaign on August 16th with an away trip to Mufulira Wanderers. Things started on a bright note when Luka Ng’uni put them ahead just before halftime in the 45th minute. But the joy was short-lived as Wanderers hit back through Patson Kwataine in the 46th minute before Owen sealed it with a 65th-minute strike. The 2-1 defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, especially after leading.
Their second outing proved even more daunting. Away at Nkoloma Stadium, they faced a rampant Red Arrows side. Despite showing flashes of determination, Mines United fell 4-1. Saddam Yusuf tormented them with a hat-trick (37’, 47’, 79’) while Albert Kagwanda added a stoppage-time fourth. The visitors’ only consolation came from Akakulubelwa Mwaichaiba, who converted a penalty in the 67th minute.
A Glimmer of Hope Against the Champions
Week three offered a rare positive. Hosting defending champions Power Dynamos, Mines United produced a gritty defensive display, frustrating the champions to a 0-0 stalemate. That point remains their only reward so far, hinting at the resilience within the squad.
Another Setback at Edwin Imboela
Just when hope seemed to rise, Mines United suffered a setback in Week Four against Green Buffaloes. After holding firm for most of the match, fatigue and lapses of concentration cost them dearly. Bornwell Mwape struck in the 80th minute before Eric Chomba sealed it four minutes later. The 2-0 defeat keeps Mines United in the relegation places with just 1 point from 4 matches.
Next Test: A Relegation Dogfight?
The newcomers’ next assignment is away to NAPSA Stars, another side struggling to find their rhythm this season with only 2 points from four games. For Mines United, this fixture could be season-defining. A win would not only boost confidence but also lift them out of the bottom spots, while another defeat could further deepen relegation fears.
Can They Survive?
Mines United have shown grit, especially against Power Dynamos, but their lack of goals and defensive lapses remain major concerns. Survival will depend on whether they can quickly adapt to the pace of the league, turn narrow losses into wins, and pick up points against fellow strugglers.
The big question remains: Will Mines United beat the drop, or is relegation already looming for the newly promoted side?
