Machday COSAFA2025 U17: Zambia Kick Off Title Defence

The road to glory begins in Norton, Zimbabwe, and it couldn’t have been scripted any better. Zambia’s Under-17 boys, the undisputed kings of COSAFA, launch their title defence this afternoon (Friday) with a mouthwatering clash against age-old rivals South Africa at the Ngoni Stadium.

This isn’t just a group match it’s a final before the final.

Zambia: The COSAFA Giants

The Junior Chipolopolo aren’t coming here to make up numbers. They arrive as back-to-back champions and the most successful team in COSAFA U17 history, with four titles (2017, 2019, 2022, 2024) already in the trophy cabinet.

The mission is two-fold:

Defend the crown and secure a top-four spot that guarantees qualification to the U17 Africa Cup of Nations the stepping stone to the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar this November.

Amajimbos: South Africa’s Hungry Rivals

South Africa, with three COSAFA titles and eight finals appearances, are no pushovers. They have history, pedigree, and a burning desire to stop Zambia’s dominance.

But the scars of the past are fresh: Zambia knocked them out in last year’s semis and have twice defeated them in finals. This is more than just football it’s a rivalry dripping in history and pride.

Zambia’s squad has a golden core of World Cup-bound talents who have already proven their mettle on the continental stage.

Mapalo Simute (Mkushi Rising Stars) – Midfield maestro, heartbeat of the team.

Nthasiwile Malupande (Kafue Celtic) – Creative engine with flair.

Joseph Zulu (Nangweshi Pirates) – A clinical finisher with ice in his veins.

Kelvin Chipelu (Forest Rangers) – The goal poacher.

William Zulu (Atletico Lusaka) – Safe hands between the sticks.

With such a core, coach Chris Kaunda has reason to be confident.

Assistant coach Francis Kombe has cooled the pressure talk “We are under no pressure despite being defending champions. The boys are showing great commitment and attitude.”

Team doctor Emmanuel Kanswe added some good news too says the squad is injury-free and fully fit for battle.
