“I Knew I’d Save It” – Willard Mwanza on His AFCON Penalty Heroics

“I Knew I’d Save It” – Willard Mwanza on His AFCON Penalty Heroics

By Bola Yapa Zed Sports Desk | 23rd December 2025

Chipolopolo goalkeeper Willard Mwanza emerged as one of Zambia’s standout performers as the national team battled to a resilient 1–1 draw against Mali in their opening Group A match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Power Dynamos shot stopper delivered a defining moment in the first half, producing a superb penalty save that kept Zambia alive in a match where fine margins proved decisive.

With Morocco already sitting top of the group after beating Comoros, every point carries weight—and Mwanza’s composure under pressure ensured Chipolopolo avoided an early setback in Morocco.

Mwanza’s Moment of Belief Under Pressure

The pivotal incident arrived midway through the first half when Mathews Banda made a clumsy challenge on Nene Dorgeles inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, handing Mali a golden opportunity to take full control of the match.

However, Mwanza remained unshaken. El Bilal Touré stepped up for the Eagles, but his low effort was brilliantly read and stopped by the Zambian goalkeeper, who dived sharply to deny Mali a second goal.

“I was not shaken by the referee’s decision to award Mali a penalty,” Mwanza said after the match.
“I trusted myself completely. As the Malian player stepped up, I looked at him and knew I was going to stop his penalty kick.”

The save lifted Zambia and visibly disrupted Mali’s rhythm, reinforcing the importance of elite goalkeeping at tournament level.

From Setback to Response

Despite the penalty miss, Mali eventually broke the deadlock through Lassine Sinayoko, capitalising on a moment of defensive lapse to give the West Africans a deserved lead. Zambia, however, refused to panic and gradually grew into the contest, showing patience and belief in their structure.

That composure was rewarded deep into added time when Patson Daka struck the equaliser, rescuing a vital point and underlining Zambia’s fighting spirit. The goal ensured Chipolopolo remained firmly in contention in a tightly poised Group A, where margins between qualification and elimination are razor-thin.

Mali, meanwhile, face a stern test against hosts Morocco, a fixture that could significantly reshape the group dynamics before the final round.
