FAZ President Mweemba Meets Infantino at FIFA Summit

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reiterated his admiration for Zambia’s deep-rooted football culture, pledging the world governing body’s unwavering support to further develop the game in the country. The remarks came during a high-level meeting with Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Keith Mweemba in Miami, on the sidelines of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup summit.

The engagement reflects FIFA’s broader objective of empowering national associations through initiatives such as the FIFA Forward Programme and Football For Schools, with Zambia now earmarked for increased investment in key football sectors.

Infantino: “Zambia Has Great Passion for Football”

Speaking after the strategic meeting, Infantino described Zambia as a football-loving nation with enormous potential.

“Zambia has a great passion for football, which I saw during my visit there last year. Today’s meeting with FAZ President Keith Mweemba was an opportunity for me to reaffirm FIFA’s commitment to continue supporting football development,” said Infantino.

The FIFA chief previously visited Zambia in June 2024, where he met with President Hakainde Hichilema, the Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, and the FAZ executive committee.

Focus on FIFA Forward and Grassroots Development

The meeting covered key development programmes, particularly the FIFA Forward Programme, which enables associations to access funding for infrastructure and technical progress. Infantino confirmed that discussions also emphasized strengthening grassroots football, youth development, and school football programmes.

“We discussed how FIFA Forward funds can be used to strengthen football in beautiful Zambia. I also thanked President Keith Mweemba for proactively interacting with the Football For Schools programme,” Infantino added.

The Football For Schools initiative integrates football with education, equipping children with life skills through sport.

FAZ Grateful for Continued FIFA Partnership

FAZ President Keith Mweemba expressed his appreciation for FIFA’s ongoing collaboration and reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to aligning with global best practices in football administration.

“We remain committed to aligning with FIFA’s vision and global standards. This partnership is vital as we continue investing in infrastructure, governance, and technical development,” Mweemba said.

Mweemba was accompanied by FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, who also participated in the summit.
