FAZ Bars 150 Referees After Failing 2026 Assessments

By Bola Yapa Zed Sports Desk | 30th December 2025

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has disqualified 150 referees from officiating official league matches next season after they failed mandatory national assessments. The move forms part of FAZ’s efforts to improve refereeing standards amid growing criticism from clubs and football stakeholders.

FAZ Releases Official Assessment Results

According to an official list released by FAZ and signed by General Secretary Machacha Shepande, the assessments were conducted to determine the suitability of referees to handle matches across various FAZ-sanctioned competitions.

The evaluation process tested referees across three critical areas:

  • Physical fitness

  • Mental aptitude

  • Written examinations

These components were designed to ensure referees meet the modern demands of match officiating at competitive levels.

372 Referees Cleared for 2026 Season

Out of 522 referees who underwent the national scrutineering exercise, 372 have been cleared to officiate during the 2026 football season. The remaining 150 failed to meet the minimum requirements and will be ineligible to officiate official league matches next season.

FAZ has confirmed that the affected referees will have to wait until next year to be reassessed and considered for certification.

Decision Comes Amid Officiating Concerns

The development comes against the backdrop of widespread concern over declining refereeing standards in Zambian football. In recent seasons, clubs, officials, and supporters have repeatedly raised complaints over inconsistent officiating, controversial decisions, and uneven application of the laws of the game.

Several league matches have ended in protests, disciplinary cases, and formal complaints, placing referees firmly under the spotlight.

FAZ Emphasises Professionalism and Accountability

FAZ has previously acknowledged the challenges facing match officials and has reiterated its commitment to restoring confidence in refereeing. The association has stressed the importance of:

  • Strict and transparent assessments

  • Continuous training programmes

  • Improved physical conditioning

  • Professional accountability

The latest assessment results signal a tougher stance as FAZ seeks to raise officiating standards across all competitions.

Conclusion

By barring 150 referees from officiating next season, FAZ has sent a clear message that minimum standards will be enforced. While the decision may spark debate, it underlines the association’s intent to improve match officiating and protect the integrity of Zambian football as the 2026 season approaches.
