FIFA GIVES FAZ 21-DAY ULTIMATUM TO HOLD ELECTIVE AGM
LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – April 15, 2025
World football governing body FIFA has instructed the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to reconvene its elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) within 21 days, following the court-ordered halt of the initial meeting scheduled for March 29, 2025.
FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga confirmed that Football House has today received formal communication from FIFA, which includes a directive that the reconvened AGM must take place no later than May 10, 2025 in Lusaka or its surrounding areas.
“As for your request for guidance in this situation, please note that we are of the opinion that the Annual Elective General Meeting (AGM) must be immediately reconvened to take place in 21 days… latest by 10 May 2025,” stated Elkhan Mammadov, FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer.
FIFA also issued a stern warning regarding any further recourse to ordinary courts, describing it as a breach of FIFA Statutes that could lead to possible suspension of FAZ, regardless of whether FAZ itself is at fault.
“The infringement of the aforementioned provisions of the FIFA Statutes may give rise to grounds for the suspension of FAZ irrespective of whether the infringement was attributed to FAZ or not,” added Mammadov.
FIFA will again send representatives to observe the reconvened AGM, as they did during the previously aborted Livingstone meeting. The governing body expressed serious concern about the Zambian High Court’s injunction issued less than 24 hours before the AGM, which effectively halted the election process.
Kamanga assured the public that FAZ will now proceed to issue the required notice for the reconvened AGM in line with the association’s constitution.
This intervention is expected to bring clarity and finality to what has been a period of legal and administrative uncertainty in Zambian football governance.
