Clifford Mulenga Tips Nkana as Dangerous Dark Horse Ahead of New Season

Former Chipolopolo forward Clifford Mulenga has described Nkana FC as a dangerous dark horse ahead of the 2026/27 MTN Super League season while identifying Power Dynamos and Red Arrows as the main title contenders.

Mulenga believes Nkana’s rich history, loyal fan base, and unpredictable nature make them one of the most dangerous teams in the league despite recent inconsistency.

The former Zambia international shared his thoughts as clubs begin preparations for what is expected to be another competitive MTN Super League campaign.

“Nkana Are Dangerous”

According to Mulenga, Nkana remain a difficult team to predict because of their ability to compete strongly when least expected.

“Nkana remains one of the most unpredictable clubs in the league, always balancing between struggle and success,” Mulenga said.

“However, they are a dangerous dark horse because of their history, fan base and ability to rise when least expected.”

The Kitwe giants endured mixed fortunes during the just-ended campaign but still remain one of the biggest clubs in Zambian football.

Their passionate supporters and winning tradition continue to make them a serious threat whenever momentum begins to build around the club.

Power Dynamos and Red Arrows Backed for Title

Despite highlighting Nkana’s potential danger, Mulenga believes the 2026/27 title race will mainly revolve around reigning champions Power Dynamos and ABSA Cup winners Red Arrows.

The two clubs have dominated recent seasons and shared four of the last five league titles between them.

“These are currently the two benchmark clubs in Zambian football,” Mulenga explained.

The former Chipolopolo attacker praised both clubs for building strong structures capable of sustaining success.

“Their consistency has not come by luck but through strong club structure, player retention, disciplined recruitment, stability, and a clear football identity.”

ZESCO Still a Threat

Mulenga also believes ZESCO United still possess the quality and resources required to challenge for major honours.

However, he stressed that stability within the club’s technical setup will be key if they are to compete consistently with the league’s strongest sides.

“In my view, only ZESCO United has the structure and capacity to consistently match them, provided they address and stabilize their coaching department,” he said.

ZESCO United endured an inconsistent 2025/26 season but still showed flashes of quality during the campaign.

Zanaco Mentioned as Potential Contenders

Mulenga further stated that Zanaco FC could also return as serious title challengers if they improve consistency within the squad.

The Bankers have struggled to maintain strong title pushes in recent years despite possessing talented players and experience.

According to Mulenga, improving consistency could help Zanaco re-establish themselves among Zambia’s elite clubs.

Interesting Season Ahead

With Power Dynamos aiming to defend their title once again and Red Arrows looking to build on their ABSA Cup success, the 2026/27 MTN Super League season is already generating excitement.

Clubs across the country are expected to strengthen their squads during the offseason as they prepare for another competitive title race.

Conclusion

Clifford Mulenga believes the upcoming MTN Super League season could once again be dominated by Power Dynamos and Red Arrows, but he has warned against underestimating Nkana FC.

With their history, support base, and unpredictable nature, the former Chipolopolo star believes the Kitwe giants remain capable of surprising many people next season.
