Chipolopolo midfielder Joshua Mutale believes Power Dynamos’ CAF Champions League journey played a major role in transforming the club into one of the most dominant teams in Zambian football this season.
The former Power Dynamos midfielder says the experience gained during the club’s debut CAF Champions League group stage appearance helped elevate the team’s mentality and performances, especially during the second half of the 2025/2026 campaign.
Mutale’s former side went on to retain the FAZ Super League title in emphatic fashion, finishing 15 points clear at the top with four games remaining.
Slow Start, Strong Finish in CAF
Power Dynamos initially struggled during their first-ever CAF Champions League group stage campaign after losing their opening two matches.
However, the Kitwe giants responded impressively in their final four group matches, winning two, drawing one, and losing one to finish third in Group A with seven points.
Their continental improvement during January and February 2026 coincided with a remarkable domestic run that saw the club become nearly unstoppable in local competition.
20 Games Unbeaten
Power Dynamos went on a sensational 20-match unbeaten run in all competitions beginning January 10, 2026.
The impressive streak helped the club comfortably retain the FAZ Super League title before eventually ending in the 2026 ABSA Cup final, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Red Arrows.
Despite the cup final disappointment, the campaign still marked one of the strongest seasons in the club’s history.
“This Team Is Different”
Speaking to ZNBC Radio Sports, Mutale praised the progress Power Dynamos have made and believes the club has reached another level.
“They have raised the standard, I would say. If you watch them, you know that this team is different and they are competing for something,” Mutale said.
“So I just hope they continue doing what they are doing.”
The midfielder believes the experience of competing against strong African opposition helped improve the team’s confidence, intensity, and mentality domestically.
Massive Progress at Power Dynamos
Mutale also urged the club to maintain its current direction, insisting the progress being made is clearly visible.
“I think they should not change because you can see progress even if you are watching Power Dynamos,” he said.
“You can see that they are moving forward. It was just disappointing the game that they played against Red Arrows.”
The midfielder admitted the performance in the ABSA Cup final did not match the standards Power Dynamos had set throughout the season.
“It wasn’t according to their standards, but you know it’s part of football. But the progress so far is very massive.”
Historic Achievement for Power
Power Dynamos’ title triumph also carried historic significance for the Kitwe club.
The 2025/2026 championship marked the first time in the club’s history that Power Dynamos successfully defended the FAZ Super League title.
The achievement further highlighted the consistency and dominance the club displayed throughout the campaign.
Conclusion
Joshua Mutale believes Power Dynamos’ experience in the CAF Champions League helped shape the mentality and quality that eventually drove their successful title defence.
Although the season ended with disappointment in the ABSA Cup final, the club’s overall campaign demonstrated massive progress both domestically and continentally.
With the standards now raised, many will be watching closely to see whether Power Dynamos can continue building on their impressive momentum next season.
