Christopher Katongo Backs Southern African Teams for 2025 AFCON Success

Christopher Katongo Confident COSAFA Nations Can Shine at AFCON 2025

By Bola Yapa Zed | 10th November 2025.

Former Zambia captain Christopher Katongo believes Southern African teams have what it takes to challenge for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Morocco.

Katongo, who led the Chipolopolo to a historic triumph at the 2012 AFCON in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, expressed optimism that COSAFA nations can replicate Zambia’s success on the continental stage. His comments come as the Southern African region records seven representatives at the AFCON for the first time in tournament history — a new milestone for the region.

“The Gap is Closing” – Katongo Confident in COSAFA Progress

In an interview with CAFOnline, Katongo said that teams from the region have improved significantly and can now compete toe-to-toe with Africa’s traditional powerhouses.

“Southern African teams have improved a lot in recent years. The gap between regions is closing, and every team that qualifies has a chance,” Katongo said.

He further encouraged the COSAFA sides to maintain their discipline and confidence throughout the competition.

“If they stay disciplined and believe in their style of play, there’s no reason they can’t go all the way again — just like we did in 2012,” he added.

Southern Africa’s Record AFCON Presence

According to CAF, this year’s AFCON in Morocco 2025 will feature seven COSAFA nations, marking the region’s strongest representation in history. The development highlights the growing competitiveness of Southern African football across the continent.

Zambia, South Africa, Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi are all expected to represent the region, with several teams showing great promise during the qualifiers.

Zambia’s Preparations Continue

The Chipolopolo are currently intensifying their preparations for the tournament with international friendly matches against South Africa and Burundi during the November FIFA window. These fixtures will give newly appointed head coach Moses Sichone a chance to assess his squad’s readiness ahead of the Morocco showpiece.

Zambia will face South Africa on November 15 in Port Elizabeth, before taking on Burundi on November 18 in Bujumbura.

Katongo’s confidence in the region’s progress reflects a growing belief that Southern African football is entering a new era of competitiveness and ambition on the continental stage.
