Aguila Stars have confirmed the appointment of 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner Chisamba Lungu as their new player-coach, marking a significant addition to their technical setup ahead of the second half of the ZPL Men’s National League season. The experienced midfielder, widely regarded as one of Zambia’s most gifted playmakers of his generation, brings a blend of leadership, mentorship, and elite-level experience both locally and abroad.
Chisamba Lungu Takes on Dual Role at Aguila Stars
The club announced that Chisamba will take up the rare dual responsibility of contributing on the pitch while simultaneously supporting the technical development of the team’s youth structures. Aguila Stars stated:
“Chisamba Lungu joins the Eagles with a distinguished career at the highest levels of African and European football, more than 40 international caps, and a pivotal role in Zambia’s historic 2012 Africa Cup of Nations triumph. He will support the technical development and mentoring of our junior sides while remaining available for first-team duties.”
His new role is effective immediately, with the club positioning him as both a senior squad option and a key pillar in the club’s long-term football philosophy.
A Career Rooted in Experience
Chisamba’s career spans over a decade of top-flight football across Africa and Europe. His most notable spell came in Eastern Europe, where he played for Baia Zugdidi and later became a household name at FC Ural in Russia. After returning to Zambia, he featured for several top domestic clubs including Buildcon, Nkana, Zanaco, and Nkwazi.
In 2023, he also held a player-coach role at Atletico Lusaka, showcasing his capability in balancing technical duties with on-field responsibilities. Last year, he was attached to Vista Academy in Russia—one of the country’s top youth development institutions with connections to partner clubs in Armenia and Bulgaria—while working on a coaching course.
Boost to Aguila Stars’ Football Structure
Aguila Stars are building a strong foundation in the ZPL Men’s National League, and the technical expertise of an AFCON champion is expected to add substantial value. Chisamba’s mentorship will be crucial for the club’s junior players, especially those transitioning to senior football.
His presence is also expected to strengthen the team’s on-field dynamics, offering creativity, vision, and leadership whenever called upon for first-team duties.
Legacy of a Champion
Chisamba’s contribution to Zambian football remains significant. He was a key figure in Hervé Renard’s Chipolopolo team that lifted the 2012 AFCON trophy in Gabon/Equatorial Guinea—one of Zambia’s greatest football achievements.
With vast experience, technical intelligence, and natural leadership, Chisamba Lungu remains one of Zambia’s most respected footballers. His arrival at Aguila Stars marks a new chapter—one filled with opportunity for both the club and the younger players who will benefit from his mentorship.
