Newly appointed Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) General Secretary Charles Chakatazya has outlined an ambitious vision for Zambian football, declaring that qualification for the FIFA World Cup and winning major continental trophies are among his top priorities.
The experienced football administrator was officially appointed on Monday following a meeting of the FAZ Executive Committee and has already set his sights on helping Zambia achieve greater success on both the continental and global stage.
World Cup and WAFCON Among Key Targets
Speaking in an interview with ZNBC Sports News, Chakatazya said one of his major objectives will be helping the men’s national team qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
He also identified winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as another important target during his tenure at Football House.
The new FAZ General Secretary believes Zambia has the potential to compete with Africa’s best and achieve greater success at international level.
Focus on Strengthening FAZ
Beyond success on the pitch, Chakatazya revealed that improving the association’s financial position will be a key part of his mandate.
The former club executive acknowledged that FAZ faces several challenges and believes strengthening the organisation’s revenue streams will be critical in addressing them.
A stronger financial foundation, he noted, would help improve football development and support national team programmes.
Stakeholder Collaboration a Priority
Chakatazya emphasised the importance of working together with all football stakeholders to grow the game across the country.
The veteran administrator said cooperation between clubs, sponsors, administrators, players, supporters, and other football partners will be crucial in achieving long-term success.
He expressed confidence that collective efforts can help elevate Zambian football to new heights.
Bringing Over 15 Years of Experience
Chakatazya arrives at Football House with extensive experience in football administration spanning more than 15 years.
During his career, he has served as Chief Executive Officer at several major Zambian clubs, including:
- NAPSA Stars
- Nkana FC
- Kabwe Warriors
His leadership experience at club level is expected to play a significant role as he takes on one of the most important administrative positions in Zambian football.
New Era at Football House
His appointment comes at a crucial period for Zambian football, with both the men’s and women’s national teams preparing for important international assignments.
The Chipolopolo are looking ahead to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, while the Copper Queens continue preparing for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Many stakeholders will now be eager to see how Chakatazya’s leadership contributes to FAZ’s strategic goals moving forward.
Conclusion
Charles Chakatazya has wasted little time in outlining his ambitions following his appointment as FAZ General Secretary.
With World Cup qualification, WAFCON success, financial growth, and football development among his priorities, the experienced administrator is aiming to help usher in a new chapter for Zambian football.
The challenge now will be turning those ambitions into reality as Football House begins a new era under its refreshed leadership structure.
