Brazil Scramble for 1–1 Draw Against Zambia at U17 World Cup

Zambia Hold Brazil to 1–1 Draw, Advance to Round of 32 at U-17 World Cup

By Bola Yapa Zed | 10th November 2025

The Zambia Under-17 national team capped off their FIFA U-17 World Cup Group H campaign with a spirited 1-1 draw against Brazil on Wednesday evening in Qatar. The result saw the Young Chipolopolo finish second in the group on seven points, level with the South Americans, who topped the standings on goal difference.

Kalimina’s Stunning Corner Gives Zambia the Edge

Zambia started the game with confidence and purpose, dominating early exchanges against the tournament favourites. Their efforts were rewarded in the 25th minute when captain Jonathan Kalimina scored directly from a corner kick, catching the Brazilian defence and goalkeeper Jao Pedro off guard.

The goal was a moment of brilliance that encapsulated Zambia’s attacking intent. Throughout the first half, the Young Chipolopolo created several opportunities, recording 11 shots compared to Brazil’s five, with their pace and pressing unsettling the South Americans.

Goalkeeper Christo Chitambala stood tall in the 30th minute, denying Wendeson Santos Dell from close range with a superb save to preserve Zambia’s lead. Moments later, Mapalo Simute came agonisingly close to doubling the advantage, but his low shot lacked the necessary power and was easily gathered by the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Brazil Fight Back, Chitambala Stands Firm

After the break, Brazil raised their intensity, forcing Zambia onto the defensive. Despite sustained pressure, the Zambian backline, marshalled by Chitambala, remained disciplined. The young goalkeeper produced two key saves in quick succession to deny Angelo Candido and Dell midway through the half.

However, the pressure finally paid off in the 81st minute when Dell made amends for his earlier misses, heading home Candido’s cross from the right to bring Brazil level at 1–1.

Despite the late setback, Zambia showed maturity and resilience, maintaining composure until the final whistle to secure a vital point against one of world football’s giants.

Zambia March Into Knockouts with Heads Held High

The draw means Zambia conclude Group H with seven points, having beaten Indonesia (3–1) and Honduras (2–0) in their earlier fixtures. Brazil also finish on seven points but take the top spot courtesy of a superior goal difference.

Both sides have now advanced to the Round of 32, marking a proud moment for Zambian football as the young squad continues to impress on the global stage.

Head coach Dennis Makinka and his technical bench will now focus on preparing for the knockout stages, where Zambia will aim to continue their fairytale run at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
