Zesco United’s Unbeaten Run With The Interim Technical Bench

Zesco United’s impressive unbeaten run in the MTN Super League has raised significant questions within the club’s boardroom. As the team continues to deliver solid performances under interim coach Emmanuel Siwale, the Zesco United executive board faces a dilemma should they go ahead with the recruitment of a new head coach and technical bench, or should they allow the interim team to continue their successful stint?

Historically, teams often perform well under new or interim management as players aim to impress and secure their places in the squad. This “honeymoon period” is something Zesco United is currently experiencing. However, some experts believe that this may only be temporary.

Siwale, the interim head coach, is currently riding on the foundation set by George “Chicken” Lwandamina, the previous head coach who was dismissed following a series of underwhelming performances, particularly in the CAF competitions. Lwandamina, widely regarded as a professor of Zambian football, wasn’t given enough time to fully instill his vision, especially after the sale of key players such as Enock Sakala, Kelvin Kampamba, and Kelvin Kapumbu. This sudden upheaval in squad dynamics meant Lwandamina was left with a weakened team, making it difficult to compete at the highest level.

His dismissal, particularly due to CAF performance, was viewed by many as unfair, given the circumstances. It appears that the Zesco United board had not fully planned for a scenario where Lwandamina might struggle to meet the unrealistic expectations placed upon him, especially without his star players.

As Siwale continues to guide the team through this successful period, many are questioning whether Zesco United’s board truly has a long-term vision. The concern is that the underlying issues within the club such as the lack of strategic planning in player transfers and coach appointments will eventually resurface. For now, Siwale’s success could be masking these deeper problems.

Zesco United fans and stakeholders are left to wonder if the interim setup is sustainable or if the club needs to return to the drawing board and bring in a permanent solution. The decision the board makes in the coming weeks could have long-lasting consequences for the club’s future both domestically and on the continental stage.

As the situation stands, the board must tread carefully. While the results under Siwale have been promising, the team’s long-term stability and success hinge on whether the club addresses the deeper structural issues that led to Lwandamina’s departure in the first place.
