Mufulira Wanderers Football Club have officially confirmed the departure of club captain Collins Makungu, who has completed a permanent transfer to Zanaco Football Club, bringing an end to a long and memorable chapter at Shinde Stadium.
Makungu, fondly known as Kapandaula, leaves Wanderers as one of the club’s most influential players of the modern era, having risen through the ranks from the youth team to captain the senior side.
Makungu’s Journey at Wanderers
Makungu joined Young Mufulira Wanderers in 2016 under coach Moses Kashimoto, where he initially operated as an attacking midfielder. His impact was immediate, finishing as the team’s top scorer on two occasions before earning promotion to the senior team during the 2018/19 season under coach Justin Chinama.
He went on to play a key role in Wanderers’ successful push back to the MTN Super League, cementing himself as a regular starter and an important dressing-room figure during a crucial rebuilding phase for the club.
Captaincy, Milestones and Silverware
In the 2022/23 season, Makungu was appointed captain and wore the armband until his departure. His leadership coincided with some of Wanderers’ most competitive seasons in recent years, both in the MTN Super League and the National League.
Makungu leaves the club with over 150 appearances to his name, contributing 8 goals and 7 assists in the Super League, as well as 5 goals and 4 assists in the National League. One of his most iconic moments came when he captained Wanderers to victory in the second edition of the IRH–Mopani Challenge Cup, scoring the decisive goal in a 1–0 second-leg win over rivals Nkana FC to seal a 2–0 aggregate triumph.
Club and Player Reactions
Wanderers acting Chief Executive Officer Evans Chinyanta paid tribute to Makungu, describing him as a disciplined and outstanding professional both on and off the pitch, while wishing him success in the next chapter of his career.
Makungu, in an emotional farewell message, admitted the decision was difficult but expressed pride in his journey with the club.
“It is a very hard decision for me. I never imagined it. I never saw it coming. But football has so many chapters. Mufulira will always be my home. Thank you for giving me the platform and the love throughout my time here. I leave a happy and proud person. Once Umwina Milambo, always Umwina Milambo,” he said.
Conclusion
Collins Makungu departs Mufulira Wanderers as a respected leader, a cup-winning captain, and a symbol of loyalty and consistency. As he begins a new chapter with Zanaco FC, Wanderers fans will remember him as a player who gave everything for the badge and left a lasting legacy at the club.
