Bola Yapa Zed | 14 November 2025

The Junior Chipolopolo’s historic run at the FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar 2025 has come to an end following a 3–1 defeat to Mali in the Round of 32. Making their debut appearance at the global showpiece, Zambia showed heart, discipline, and bravery, but Mali a team with a strong World Cup pedigree proved to be the stronger side on the night. Despite the loss, the boys gave fans unforgettable moments, with goalkeeper Christo Chitambala producing one of the best individual performances of the tournament before being forced off due to injury.

Facing a side that had reached the semifinals in three of the last four U17 World Cups, Zambia knew the challenge ahead. The match began at a high tempo, with Mali creating early chances, but Christo Chitambala was inspired — denying the West Africans on multiple occasions with world-class saves.

Zambia grew into the match and pushed for an opener, but Mali’s defensive organisation held firm. Mali thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute, but the referee ruled the goal out for a foul on Chitambala, keeping Zambia level.

The match’s turning point came in additional time of the first half when Chitambala once again rescued Zambia with a brave stop. Unfortunately, the collision left him injured, and he limped into the break, unable to continue.

Zambia were forced into a change at halftime, with Rodgers Simumba coming on for the injured Chitambala.

Mali finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Ndjicoura Bomba headed home at the far post. But Zambia’s response was impressive — showing resilience and belief.

In the 63rd minute, Mapalo Simute equalised for the Junior Chipolopolo with a close-range finish at the far post, sending Zambian fans into celebration.

For a moment, the match looked balanced as Zambia pushed for a second goal, but Mali’s pressure eventually paid off.

In the 85th minute, Mali took advantage of a defensive lapse, with Seydou Dembele restoring the lead. Another breakdown at the back in additional time allowed Lamine Keita to seal the win, making it 3–1.
