
Zambia U17 Edge Benin in World Cup Qualifier First Leg
Ndola, Zambia – 19 April 2025
The Zambia U17 Women’s National Team, popularly known as the Copper Princesses, registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Benin in the first leg of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup third-round qualifier, played at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Team captain and star midfielder Mercy Chipasula was the standout performer, netting a brace to give Zambia a vital home advantage going into the return leg.
Zambia opened the scoring early in the 15th minute, with Chipasula calmly slotting home after a brilliant team move. However, Benin responded in the 58th minute through Yenido Gandonou, who capitalized on a lapse in Zambia’s defence to draw level.
But just two minutes later, Chipasula restored Zambia’s lead with her second goal of the afternoon—finishing off a swift attack in the 60th minute to make it 2-1 in favor of the hosts.
The result gives Zambia a slim advantage heading into the return fixture scheduled for April 26, 2025, in Togo, where Benin will host due to stadium availability. The conditions are expected to be hot and humid, which will pose a challenge for the young Zambian side.
While Zambia earned the result, the match revealed areas for improvement. Playing away against West African teams is always difficult not just because of the crowd pressure but also due to the intense heat and physical demands. With Togo’s equatorial climate, the Copper Princesses will need to adapt their high-pressing style to suit the conditions.
The technical bench is advised to consider a more compact tactical system, minimizing the distance players need to cover while maintaining shape and alertness, both in and out of possession. Mental focus and game management will be key to preserving the lead or extending it in hostile territory.
Zambia takes a positive step in their World Cup qualification journey but must remain cautious and well-prepared for a potentially tougher challenge away. With the right game plan and disciplined execution, the Copper Princesses can secure a historic spot in the next round.
