CHAN 2025 Draw: Zambia Lands in Group of Death
The draws for the rescheduled 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) have been finalized, placing Zambia in Group A alongside hosts Kenya, two-time champions DR Congo, Angola, and North African heavyweights Morocco. Dubbed the “Group of Death,” this lineup promises a highly competitive group stage.
Zambia’s Challenge in Group A
Led by coach Wedson Nyirenda, Zambia faces a daunting task against some of Africa’s most formidable teams. DR Congo boasts a rich CHAN history with two championships to their name, while Morocco, semi-finalists in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, brings their trademark strength and organization. Neighbors Angola, known for their tactical discipline, and debutants Kenya complete the lineup, ensuring no easy games for the Chipolopolo.
Speaking after the draw, Nyirenda expressed cautious optimism:
“It’s a tough group, but Zambia has faced tough opponents before. Our domestic talent has what it takes to compete at the highest level. We respect all teams, but we are here to fight and prove our worth.”
Tournament Rescheduling and Co-Hosting
Originally slated for February 2025, the tournament was moved to August to allow co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to finalize infrastructure upgrades. The biennial tournament exclusively features players from domestic leagues, providing a platform for homegrown talent to shine on the continental stage.
Key Group Highlights
- Group A: Zambia, Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, Kenya
- Group B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
- Group D: Defending champions Senegal are paired with Nigeria, Sudan, and Congo.
The presence of powerhouse teams like Senegal and Nigeria in Group D adds another layer of excitement to the tournament, with all eyes on whether the holders can defend their title.
Focus on Zambia
Zambia’s best CHAN performance came in 2009 when they reached the semi-finals. Nyirenda will hope to replicate or better that achievement with a squad built from the MTN Super League and National Division One. Players like Ackim Mumba and other emerging talents will be pivotal in navigating the challenges of Group A.
As the tournament approaches, Zambia will look to sharpen its preparations and build momentum ahead of their opening game.
