Coach Wedson Nyirenda Confident Ahead of CHAN 2024 Draws
Chipolopolo legend and seasoned coach Wedson Nyirenda has exuded optimism as Zambia awaits the draws for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Nyirenda, a former Zambia national team coach, believes the rescheduling of the tournament from February to August provides an excellent opportunity for the Chipolopolo to sharpen their preparations.
Zambia’s Advantage in the New Timeline
CAF’s decision to delay CHAN 2024 aims to give teams additional time to organize and field competitive squads comprising exclusively domestic league players. Speaking about the schedule change, Nyirenda highlighted the benefits of an extended preparation period, saying:
“This adjustment allows Zambia to refine its strategies, scout local talent effectively, and ensure we present a formidable team. It’s a blessing in disguise for us.”
The extended timeline could be crucial for Zambia’s preparations, especially in integrating players from the MTN Super League and National Division One League.
Focus on Domestic Talent
CHAN’s unique format, which restricts teams to using home-based players, has often been seen as a platform for Zambia to showcase its rich pool of domestic talent. Nyirenda praised the local leagues for their role in nurturing talent and expressed confidence in Zambia’s ability to assemble a competitive squad.
“We have seen the quality in our local leagues. This is a chance to give our players international exposure and make the nation proud,” Nyirenda stated.
Zambia’s CHAN Record
Zambia’s best performance in CHAN came during the inaugural edition in 2009, where the team secured a third-place finish. Nyirenda believes the current crop of players has the potential to surpass this milestone and compete for the title.
Awaiting the Draw
As CAF prepares to unveil the group stage lineups, Zambian fans are eager to learn their team’s opponents. The draw is expected to be a key moment in determining the Chipolopolo’s path to potential glory in August.
