“We Played as Trained, But South Africa Outclassed Us – Chris Kaunda”

The Zambia Under-17 national team suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to rivals South Africa in their opening 2025 COSAFA U17 AFCON Qualifier Group B clash on Friday afternoon in Harare.

The Junior Chipolopolo were punished for defensive lapses as South Africa showed clinical finishing to take full control of the match.

Match Summary

South Africa struck early through Omphemetse Sekgoto in the 2nd minute, before Mpho Molepo doubled the lead in the 26th minute.
The pressure continued as Tandanani Mhlongo made it 3-0 in the 36th minute, leaving Zambia with a mountain to climb.

The contest was sealed in the second half when Emmanuel Mbuti unfortunately turned the ball into his own net in the 75th minute, completing South Africa’s 4-0 victory.

Coach Chris Kaunda Reacts

After the match, Zambia U17 coach Chris Kaunda admitted South Africa were the better side on the day despite his players’ efforts:

“The boys tried to play how we trained, but South Africa was just a better team than us,” Kaunda said.

He, however, emphasized that the team will regroup ahead of their next crucial match.
