Ronwen Williams Reflects on Mexico Defeat as Bafana Bafana Turn Focus to Czech Republic

Bafana Bafana suffered defeat in their opening Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, falling 2-0 to co-hosts Mexico at Mexico City Stadium.

Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured all three points for El Tri, leaving South Africa with work to do in their quest to reach the knockout stages.

South Africa Bottom of Group A

The result sees South Africa sit at the bottom of Group A after the opening round of matches.

In the group’s other fixture, South Korea came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1, moving level on points with Mexico.

Both Mexico and South Korea have three points, but the North American side tops the standings on goal difference.

Williams Admits Mistakes Proved Costly

Speaking after the match, South Africa captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams acknowledged that defensive errors played a major role in the defeat.

The experienced shot-stopper also pointed to South Africa’s long absence from the World Cup stage, suggesting the match highlighted the difference in experience between the two sides.

“If you make mistakes, they will punish you. They will hurt you at this level,” Williams said.

Despite the setback, Williams praised his teammates for their resilience and determination throughout the contest.

“We haven’t been part of the World Cup for a very long time. Went down, but we kept fighting. We didn’t give them anything towards the end. We had a few decent chances as well. We’ll keep fighting, we’ll keep going as a team, and we’ll be better.”

Quiñones Praises Team Spirit and Home Support

Mexico winger Julián Quiñones, who opened the scoring, expressed his delight after finding the net in front of a passionate home crowd.

The winger credited both his teammates and the Mexican supporters for helping the team secure a winning start to their World Cup campaign.

“I’m happy and excited to score my first World Cup goal in such a spectacular stadium with amazing fans. It’s important for me to acknowledge what my team-mates did to secure the first three points. We’ve felt the support of the fans these past few days,” he stated.

Attention Turns to Czech Republic Clash

Bafana Bafana will now focus on their second Group A fixture against the Czech Republic at Atlanta Stadium on June 18.

With Mexico and South Korea already on three points, the match could prove crucial to South Africa’s hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.

Meanwhile, Mexico will look to build on their winning start when they take on South Korea in their next outing.
