Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in a thrilling quarter-final at Kansas City Stadium.
The reigning world champions were pushed all the way by a resilient Swiss side before late goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez sealed victory and set up a mouthwatering semi-final clash against England.
Mac Allister Gives Argentina Early Advantage
Argentina made a bright start and were rewarded in the 10th minute when Alexis Mac Allister headed home from a Lionel Messi corner to give Lionel Scaloni’s side an early lead. The defending champions controlled much of the first half but were unable to extend their advantage despite creating several promising opportunities.
Switzerland remained disciplined and gradually grew into the contest, frustrating Argentina with their organised defending.
Switzerland Hit Back
The Swiss found their equaliser in the 67th minute through Dan Ndoye, who finished clinically to bring his side level and force Argentina onto the back foot.
Just minutes later, Switzerland suffered a major setback when Breel Embolo was sent off following a VAR review, leaving Murat Yakin’s side to play the remainder of the match with ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Switzerland defended bravely to force extra time.
Álvarez and Lautaro Settle the Tie
With penalties looming, Julián Álvarez produced a moment of brilliance in the 112th minute, curling a stunning long-range effort into the net to restore Argentina’s lead.
Switzerland pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Lautaro Martínez wrapped up the victory in stoppage time of extra time, finishing from close range to make it 3-1 and send Argentina into the last four.
England Await in the Semi-Finals
The victory keeps Argentina’s dream of retaining the FIFA World Cup alive and sets up a blockbuster semi-final against England.
The match will also feature four of the world’s highest-ranked national teams, with Argentina joining England, France and Spain in the final four of the tournament.
Conclusion
Switzerland pushed the defending champions to their limits, but Argentina’s experience and quality ultimately proved decisive.
With England now standing between them and another World Cup final, Lionel Messi and his teammates remain firmly on course to defend their global crown.
