Red Arrows Fly Out of the CAF Champions League
Red Arrows Football Club’s journey in the CAF Champions League came to an end after a 2-1 defeat to Congolese giants TP Mazembe in the second leg of the second round, played today in Lubumbashi. The result saw Red Arrows eliminated on a 4-1 aggregate score, despite their spirited efforts in both legs.
Throughout the tie, the Airmen showed flashes of promise and determination, but their inability to capitalize on crucial scoring opportunities, coupled with defensive lapses, proved to be their undoing. In the first leg, played in Ndola, the Zambian champions failed to find the back of the net, and today’s result solidified their exit from Africa’s premier club competition.
Head coach Chisi Mbewe expressed his disappointment, reflecting on the team’s performance. “I think we were the better side in both legs, especially in Ndola, but we must improve on our tactical execution and defensive organisation,” Mbewe remarked. He acknowledged the team’s hard work but pointed out that at this level, each player must be ready to step up in such high-stakes encounters.
Despite the disappointment, Brigadier General Charles Hambulo, the Chief of Training at Red Arrows, commended the team for their fighting spirit against one of Africa’s most successful clubs. He urged the technical team and players to learn from the experience, refocus on domestic competitions, and use the lessons gained to prepare for future continental challenges.
“Though we are disappointed with the result, we are proud of the team’s efforts. Now we must focus on improving and coming back stronger. The experience from this campaign will undoubtedly help us when we return to the Champions League,” said Brigadier Hambulo.
He also took time to thank the fans and Zambian football stakeholders for their unwavering support throughout the campaign, noting that their backing was crucial in motivating the team.
While the Airmen’s African adventure ends here, they will now focus on their domestic league campaign, with hopes of securing another chance at the CAF Champions League and rectifying their mistakes for a stronger showing in the future.
