Patson Daka Debuts for Hamburg in 2-0 Loss to Borussia Dortmund

Chipolopolo Boys forward Patson Daka endured a difficult Bundesliga debut as Hamburger SV suffered a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park.

The Zambia international started the match and played 67 minutes before being replaced by Moffi, but could not find the breakthrough as Hamburg struggled to contain Dortmund during a dominant opening half.

Dortmund took control from the start and opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Serhou Guirassy produced a low finish into the bottom corner. The hosts continued to apply pressure, with Hamburg goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes making several important saves to keep his side within touching distance.

Dortmund eventually doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time through Giannis Konstantelias, whose effort took a deflection off Hamburg defender Jean-Kevin Bornauw before finding the back of the net.

The first-half statistics highlighted Dortmund’s dominance, with the hosts registering 14 shots without reply and enjoying 68 per cent possession. Hamburg improved after the interval and showed more attacking intent, with Daka coming close to reducing the deficit when he fired narrowly wide in the 67th minute shortly before being substituted.

The defeat brings a disappointing end to what had otherwise been an encouraging pre-season for Daka. The Zambian striker scored two goals and provided an assist during Hamburg’s preparations after joining the club on a one-year contract following his departure from Leicester City.

Having spent five years in England with Leicester, Daka is now beginning a new chapter in Germany. While his first Bundesliga outing ended in defeat, the 27-year-old will be hoping to quickly find his rhythm and make a greater impact as Hamburg continue their campaign.

For now, Daka and Hamburg must regroup after being handed a difficult introduction to life back in Germany’s top flight.
