Nkandu: Zambia’s Focus Is Long-Term Growth, Not Just AFCON Glory

The Government of Zambia has reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting the next head coach of the Chipolopolo, regardless of whether the appointee is local or foreign. This follows the recent departure of Avram Grant, whose two-year tenure saw Zambia qualify for consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments but struggle with consistency and cohesion.

Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts Elvis Nkandu emphasized that the government’s priority is to ensure long-term stability and development of the national team rather than short-term results. Speaking to News Diggers, Nkandu stated that the Ministry of Sport remains ready to back FAZ in its quest to appoint the right candidate capable of steering the team forward.

“Government remains dedicated to supporting whoever is appointed as the next head coach — whether local or expatriate. What matters most is building a competitive and consistent Chipolopolo side that can make the nation proud,” Nkandu said.

He added that Zambia’s football success depends on a shared vision between FAZ, the technical bench, and the government.

Nkandu noted that the Chipolopolo have experienced a challenging period of underperformance since their 2012 AFCON triumph, with inconsistent results and frequent coaching changes disrupting progress. He urged stakeholders to adopt a patient and strategic approach that emphasizes development over immediate results.

“Our focus should not just be on winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but on laying a solid foundation for a strong, competitive national team,” Nkandu stated.

The minister further stressed the importance of investing in youth structures, modern training facilities, and player development to ensure Zambia’s sustained success on the continental stage.

Nkandu also called for unity among fans and football administrators as the Chipolopolo prepare for the Morocco 2025 AFCON, where they will face Morocco, Mali, and Comoros in Group A. He expressed optimism that with the right leadership, Zambia could reclaim its reputation as one of Africa’s most exciting footballing nations.

“Zambians must rally behind the team and show patience. We are rebuilding for the future — this journey requires consistency, trust, and time,” Nkandu said.

The government’s reaffirmed backing is expected to ease FAZ’s transition as they work to identify the next head coach to guide the team through the AFCON campaign and upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Zambian government’s renewed pledge of support underscores its desire for a stable and sustainable national football project. With FAZ set to name a new coach soon, the emphasis will now shift to ensuring the technical team receives the backing needed to build a resilient and competitive Chipolopolo side capable of challenging Africa’s best once again.
