Mwenya Chibwe Leaves ZESCO United After Mutual Separation

By Bola Yapa Zed Sports Desk | 17th December 2025

Former Chipolopolo first-choice goalkeeper Cyril Mwenya Chibwe has officially parted ways with ZESCO United following a mutual separation, bringing an end to his second stint at the nine-time MTN Super League champions.

Chibwe confirmed his departure through a statement shared on social media, revealing that his four-month stay at the club was a difficult personal experience. The 32-year-old goalkeeper described the period since rejoining the Ndola-based side in August as one he “would not want any player to go through.”

“I wish to inform everyone that I have mutually separated with ZESCO United. Since arriving in August, it has been a challenging period for me personally, and it’s an experience I would not want any player to go through,” Chibwe said. “I want to sincerely thank everyone who has checked on me, supported me, and stood by me during this time. To my loyal fans and supporters, your love keeps me going, and I am truly grateful.”

Chibwe rejoined ZESCO United in August on a two-year contract, a year after initially leaving the club. However, his return did not go as planned, as he failed to make a single competitive appearance during his time with the Ndola giants, finding himself in a difficult and unclear situation throughout the first half of the season.

Despite the disappointment at club level, the former Polokwane City goalkeeper remains optimistic about the future. Chibwe says he is now focused on the next chapter of his career while continuing his off-field work through the Chibwe Foundation, which focuses on youth empowerment.

“As I move forward, I am excited to focus on a new chapter in my career and continue the work of the Chibwe Foundation – ‘Change for Youth.’ Empowering and uplifting young people remains at the heart of my journey,” he added.

Before returning to ZESCO United, Chibwe featured for South African side Black Leopards, where he enjoyed a strong 2023/24 season. He helped the club finish fourth in the league, narrowly missing out on a promotion play-off place by just one point, while keeping nine clean sheets in 18 league appearances.

Chibwe has previously played for several clubs in South Africa, including Platinum Stars, Jomo Cosmos, and Polokwane City, and remains one of Zambia’s most experienced goalkeepers despite the recent setback at club level.
