Mweene Encouraged by Chipolopolo Keepers’ Early Progress

By Bola Yapa Zed | November 19, 2025

Newly appointed Chipolopolo goalkeeper coach Kennedy Mweene says he is pleased with the early signs shown by the four goalkeepers he worked with during the recent international friendly window. Despite conceding six goals across two matches against South Africa and Angola, Mweene remains optimistic and confident that the department is heading in the right direction.

Mweene Positive About the Goalkeeping Group

Mweene, who officially joined the Moses Sichone–led technical bench, said his first days in camp left him encouraged. The goalkeepers called for duty — Toaster Nsabata, Francis Mwansa, Charles Kalumba and Mangani Banda — were tested heavily in both matches, but the former Chipolopolo legend believes there is a solid foundation to build on.

“My first impression when we got to camp… from what I have seen, I am okay with what I have seen,” he said. “But we can do more. As days go by and we meet again in camp, I think there are a lot of aspects we need to work on as goalkeepers.”

Despite the pressure the four goalkeepers faced, Mweene emphasised that the future looks promising, especially with continued camp time and specialised work.

Embracing His New Role

Speaking for the first time since his appointment, the 2012 AFCON winner said joining the national team bench was an honour he did not think twice about.
“The first time they contacted me, I didn’t even hesitate to accept the call,” he said. “I really want to contribute one way or another to the national team, especially when it comes to goalkeeping.”

Mweene’s arrival is expected to strengthen Zambia’s goalkeeping department ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Zambia will face Morocco, Comoros, and Mali in Group A beginning December 22.

Conclusion

With AFCON fast approaching, Kennedy Mweene’s hands-on approach and vast international experience could be crucial in sharpening Zambia’s goalkeeping unit. While the team conceded six goals in two games, the legendary shot-stopper emphasises growth, development, and long-term improvement — all essential ingredients as Chipolopolo prepares for Morocco.
