Motsepe Raises AFCON 2025 Prize Money to $10 Million

By Bola Yapa Zed Sports Desk | 21st December 2025

CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced a significant increase in prize money for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be hosted in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026. Under the new structure, the tournament winners will receive $10 million (approximately R167 million), marking a notable rise from the previous $7 million (R117 million) awarded at the last edition. The announcement underscores CAF’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the commercial value and global competitiveness of Africa’s flagship football tournament.

Motsepe revealed that CAF has steadily increased prize money since he assumed office, explaining that the AFCON winners’ purse was previously below $5 million before being raised to $7 million, and now to $10 million. He emphasized that this move forms part of a broader long-term strategy aimed at rewarding excellence and improving the financial sustainability of African football. According to Motsepe, the objective is clear: CAF will continue to raise prize money levels to ensure AFCON remains the most valuable and prestigious football competition on the continent.

In addition to AFCON, Motsepe disclosed that CAF has also approved significant increases in prize money for the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, although the new figures are yet to be officially announced. South African sides Mamelodi Sundowns, who are competing in the Champions League, and Stellenbosch FC, featuring in the Confederation Cup, stand to benefit from the revised rewards structure. Motsepe hinted that further details would be released in due course, noting that consultation is ongoing before the final figures are made public.
