MANDANJI READY TO FIGHT FOR U-23 PLACE

Zambia Under-23 striker Eliya Mandanji says players in camp are ready to fight for places as preparations intensify for the 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Mandanji was on target as the Junior Chipolopolo secured a 4-3 victory over Kafue Celtic in a practice match on Wednesday afternoon.

The Red Arrows forward believes the competition for places is bringing out the best in the players as they look to impress coach Chisi Mbewe and secure a place in the final squad.

“The competition is there and everyone is ready to fight for the badge. Our objective is to work hard and make the final squad,” Mandanji said.

The striker also highlighted the influence of players with senior international experience, saying their presence is motivating the younger members of the squad to make the most of the opportunity.

Mbewe has called up 45 local players for the initial assessment camp, with selected players expected to be joined by foreign-based players before the final squad is announced.

The Junior Chipolopolo have been exempted from the first round of the U-23 AFCON qualifiers and will face the winner between Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso in November.

The first leg is scheduled for 9 November, with the return leg set for 17 November.

The qualification campaign also serves as Zambia’s pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, adding greater significance to the upcoming fixtures.
