Defending champions ZESCO Ndola Girls have moved to the summit of the Northern Zone table in the ZPL Women’s Super Division after securing a 3-1 victory over Amazing Grace at Broken Hill Sports Centre in Kabwe on Sunday.
Goals from Eneless Phiri, Penelope Mulubwa and Edith Phiri ensured ZESCO Ndola Girls collected maximum points in an encounter that tested their ability to adapt to difficult playing conditions.
The hosts briefly threatened to derail the champions’ progress when Grace Nankamba converted a penalty in the 23rd minute to bring the scores level at 1-1. However, ZESCO Ndola Girls maintained their composure and went on to secure all three points, strengthening their position in the race for the Northern Zone title.
Speaking after the match, head coach Florence Mwila praised her players for putting up a strong fight and managing the game despite the challenging surface. While pleased with the result, she believed her side could have taken more of their opportunities.
“We thank God for the victory, and well done to the girls for putting up a good fight regardless of the surface not being so good,” Mwila said. “They were able to manage the game, and I think we could have done more, we could have scored more goals—but three points are very important.”
The victory lifts ZESCO Ndola Girls to the top of the Northern Zone standings with nine points. Indeni Roses follow in second place with seven points, while Trident Queens and Kansanshi Queens are next on six points each.
Mwila also took time to recognise the supporters who travelled to Kabwe to cheer on the team, highlighting the importance of their presence, particularly during away fixtures.
“To our fans, thank you very much for travelling all the way from Ndola to come and support us, some have come from Lusaka… we thank you for the support,” she said.
“The 12th player is very important, especially when you are playing away. Just being your presence gives the team morale. Thank you very much, keep supporting us!”
With the champions now leading the Northern Zone table, Mwila and her players will be looking to maintain their momentum as they continue their campaign in the ZPL Women’s Super Division. Their victory in Kabwe not only delivered three valuable points but also demonstrated their ability to manage a difficult contest and remain focused when challenged.
