Jessica Johnson Thanks Zambian Fans After Copper Princesses’ World Cup Campaign

Zambia U17 Women’s National Team forward Jessica Johnson has reflected on the lessons and experiences gained during the Copper Princesses’ campaign at the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, describing the tournament as a valuable learning opportunity despite the disappointment of failing to progress to the next round.

Zambia competed in Group D against France, Japan and Venezuela, facing tough opposition on the global stage. Although the team fell short of its ambition to advance, Johnson believes the experience will help the young players prepare better for future competitions.

“I think it was great, obviously playing hard teams like France, Japan, and Venezuela,” Johnson said. “The competition was tough, so hopefully next time it’ll be better. Yes, obviously it is disappointing, we wanted to win, we wanted to go to the next round, but I guess it’s just a learning curve for next time.”

Reflecting on the team’s performances, the young forward identified concentration and focus as key areas for improvement, particularly during crucial moments in matches.

“I think the main one was focus and concentration, especially on the pitch—like we would score and then we would lose concentration. So I think that would be something to focus on next time,” she said.

Johnson also expressed gratitude for the playing opportunities she received during the tournament, explaining that the minutes on the pitch reflected the work she had put in while preparing for the competition.

“It’s surprising, but also I put in the work so I feel as if it’s deserved, and I’m very grateful for the minutes,” she reflected.

Beyond the football, Johnson valued the opportunity to spend time with her teammates, build friendships and learn from the experience of representing Zambia at a major international tournament.

“Of course, it’s good to be with the girls all the time, it’s fun, you get to learn new things and new people,” she added.

Looking ahead, the forward hopes to build on the experience at club level while continuing to work towards future national team opportunities. The tournament has provided her with valuable exposure to international football and a clearer understanding of the areas she needs to develop.

Johnson also spoke about her admiration for senior Zambia star Barbra Banda, whom she has watched in action, and thanked supporters for standing behind the Copper Princesses throughout their campaign.

“I’ve watched some of the games—obviously there’s Barbra Banda there, who’s great, obviously she doesn’t play in Zambia—so I watched some of her games. It’s obviously great that you guys were supporting us throughout the whole time, we would also love for you to keep doing that. Thank you guys for your support, obviously I wouldn’t be here without you guys and I would love to continue on in the future!” Johnson said.

Despite the disappointment of the campaign, Johnson’s reflections underline the importance of learning from difficult experiences, improving concentration and continuing to develop as Zambia’s young players work towards future opportunities on the international stage.
