Lubanji and Mukoma Lead Copper Queens to COSAFA Final
The Zambia Women’s National Team, known as the Copper Queens, has secured a spot in the COSAFA Women’s Championship final after a commanding 2-0 win against Malawi. This intense semi-final clash took place at Wolfson Stadium, where the Copper Queens demonstrated tactical discipline and resilience. The team, coached by Florence Mwila, came prepared to avenge their previous loss to Malawi in the 2023 tournament, making this victory even more significant. Zambia’s players showed determination from the start, dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
After a balanced first half that saw both teams struggling to break the deadlock, Zambia came out firing in the second half. Just seconds after the restart, Ochumba Oseke Lubanji took advantage of a defensive mix-up to lob the ball over the Malawian goalkeeper, putting Zambia in the lead. Lubanji’s quick reaction and precise finish showcased her attacking prowess and set the tone for the remainder of the match. The Copper Queens maintained their momentum, continuing to press forward and keep the Malawian defense on their toes.
In the 68th minute, Fridah Mukoma doubled Zambia’s lead, capitalizing on a moment of hesitation from Malawi’s goalkeeper, Mercy Sikelo. Mukoma skillfully dispossessed Sikelo and slotted the ball into the net, marking her fourth goal of the tournament. This goal not only solidified Zambia’s position in the match but also highlighted Mukoma’s impressive form throughout the championship. Her contributions have been instrumental in Zambia’s journey to the final, where her goal-scoring abilities could be crucial.

The Copper Queens’ victory over Malawi is a testament to their growth and determination to establish themselves as one of the top teams in the COSAFA region.
Now, the Copper Queens eagerly await their final opponents, who will be determined in the semi-final match between Mozambique and South Africa. The COSAFA Women’s Championship final is set for Saturday at 15:00, where Zambia will have the chance to claim the title and continue their upward trajectory in African women’s football.
