James Chamanga on VAR Zambia Podcast: “I Never Used Juju – I Just Believed in God”
Former Chipolopolo striker and 2012 AFCON winner James Chamanga joined the VAR Zambia Podcast this week to reflect on his remarkable 25-year football journey and announce his official retirement from professional football.
Chamanga, who retired last weekend, shared emotional insights into his life on and off the pitch, speaking honestly about the highs and lows of his career in Zambia, South Africa, and China. On the podcast, he opened up about his unwavering faith, discipline, and lessons he hopes to pass on to young Zambian players.
“In my entire career, I never used juju or charms,” Chamanga revealed. “I believe in God. I’ve seen people who use those things and many of them end up miserable. Your faith and your work ethic are what carry you forward.”
Among the highlights of his career, Chamanga pointed to his historic five-goal haul for Moroka Swallows in a 6-2 league win over Platinum Stars on December 9, 2007, as one of his proudest moments.
“That game will always stay with me. It wasn’t just about scoring five goals—it was the confidence and belief it gave me moving forward,” he said.
Chamanga also spoke about the mental and physical challenges he faced during his long career, and how adapting to life in different countries shaped his worldview and professionalism.

As the former striker now steps into life after football, he’s focused on giving back and inspiring the next generation. His advice for young players is clear and powerful:
“Be disciplined, respect your coaches, and never stop believing in yourself.”
Chamanga’s episode on the VAR Zambia Podcast is a masterclass in humility, perseverance, and purpose—traits that defined him as a player and now guide him in retirement.
